Come Fly With Me

16 July 2006

Here's a Frank Sinatra story that's never been printed. It was told to me by the late entertainer Sonny King, and I dedicate it to Buddy and Carol Braune from Texas, two dear friends who want to hear more celebrity stories.

Sinatra was performing at the Cal-Neva Lodge at Lake Tahoe, and King joined him for lunch one afternoon in the hotel's coffee shop. Sinatra ordered a ham sandwich. "And tell the cook I want the ham paper-thin," he told the waiter.

The waiter returned with the ham sandwich. Sinatra took one look at it and told the waiter, "The ham's too thick. I want it sliced paper-thin."

Back came the waiter with the sandwich. "Take it back," Sinatra said. "Tell the cook I want the ham paper-thin!"

Here came the waiter again, only this time he didn't bring the sandwich. "I'm sorry, Mr. Sinatra, but the cook said for you to go -- er -- screw yourself."

Sinatra was livid. "Get that cook out here!" he barked at the waiter.

"I think he just went off duty," the waiter stammered.

Sinatra and King headed for the time office behind the hotel, waiting for the cook to punch out so Sinatra could punch him out.

Meanwhile, two cocktail waitresses walked by. "That looks like Frank Sinatra," one said to the other.

"Oh, you're crazy," the other answered. "But the little guy's kinda cute."

Incidentally, the cook never did show up.

Here's another Sinatra story that's made the rounds a few times, but it's still funny. A valet brought Sinatra's car to the hotel entrance. As Sinatra got in, he asked the valet, "What's the biggest tip you ever got?"

"A hundred dollars," the valet replied.

Sinatra peeled off two $100 bills and gave them to the valet. "By the way, who gave you the hundred?" Sinatra asked.

"Why ... you did, Mr. Sinatra."
